JUNE NEWSLETTER 2007 PAST ACTIVITIES
SOCIAL MEETING 16th MAY 2007 LOST WAX CASTING

Frank Williams brought along all his equipment for display and as tools to explain the process of lost wax casting. The aim is to produce a cast item for use in silverwork , jewellery or some item that you may want to mass produce. Rather than me trying to put the many processes and information into words members should attend a Thursday silverwork class 10.00am till 2.00pm on the second last and last Thursday of the month to watch these processes in action. Or those members with internet access should search “Lost Wax Casting” and you will find many websites with photographic and written descriptions of the process.

MINERAL GROUP MEETING 23 May 2007

Twenty two members were present at this meeting. Members reported on and displayed some nice specimens from their recent field trip to Muttama. Geoff Irwin advised how beautiful the crystals were when he visited the ‘crystal castle’ in Queensland. Greg presented Elbaite as the mineral of the month. Elbaite is a silicate and a member of the Tourmaline group, commonly used as a gemstone. Noel introduced the group to ‘Paragenesis’ by way of an exercise. Paragenises is the order of minerals being formed over a period of time. The minerals handed out for identification last month were mainly Quartz, Mica and Feldspar from Lake Bogo, Swan Hill, Victoria, Torbernite Granite Quarry. Thirteen minerals were identified from the Periodic Table of Elements and next month the group will be quizzed on the minerals 1—48 (41—48 new ) from the Table. The group started a mineral identification exercise. Sixteen minerals are to be identified using our mineral books. About four minerals have been identified and the exercise will continue next month. Freebies of Zaratite, Garnet, Beryl, Cassiterite on Quartz and Topaz/Quartz supplied by Noel

OPEN DAY 27 MAY 2007
This years OPEN DAY was considered our best ever. The weather was great there was plenty of goodies on the tailgaters tables to see and buy. We had a good turn out of members, the public and plenty of support from other lapidary clubs. The auction was a great success with only two items out of forty plus left. We raised $309 for the Australia Cancer Council “Big Morning Tea” fund raising activity. Hilly Corris would like to thank all those members who set up tables, donated food for the morning tea, the kitchen workers, the cooks on the sausage sizzle, those members running the auction, the great job done by our publicity officer, THANK YOU. It has been decided to hold the OPEN DAY ON THE FOURTH Sunday in May each year.

GET WELL
Gary Farnham is recuperating after a recent knee operation we hope to see you back in action soon.

CLUB COMPETITIONS
With only four months to go till the close of entries for our Annual Club Competitions held in conjunction with the “Festival of Gems and Mineral “ in November all club members should be well advanced in preparing entries for these competitions. With the three levels of standard ie. Novice ,Intermediate and Open for the competitions the phrase of “oh I am not good enough“ is not acceptable as you will always be competing against members of a similar standard. It has been pointed out that with the number of members taking classes and using club facilities and equipment the competition entries should be greater in number and match the number of members taking classes. As a further incentive to enter the competitions this year members will be offered class cost credits for each entry into the competition and with increasing credits for the medal winners . This year you will be asked to complete a entry form to help organizers to make sure your entry is judged in the correct section and the security of your entries are maintained. Entries must be presented in a plastic zip lock pocket and correctly labeled. Entry forms and presentation information will be available in September.
